Opera / jazz singer; public speaker; writer; producer
Janelle began her career in the arts from an early age performing with choirs, stage shows, dance revues and playing trumpet in jazz and concert bands. She studied to be an opera singer at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music, and learnt the commercial side of music performing with choirs and ensembles and managing her vocal quartet for weddings and Christmas functions. In her post-graduate year, she moonlighted at World Expo’88 in Brisbane, singing with her a capella vocal quartet The Metways and entertaining guests with her zany comedy character Janelley Melba – Roller-skating Opera Singer.
At the end of Expo she moved to Sydney to accept a full-time contract with the Australian Opera. Among other highlights, she sang in a trio with Dame Joan Sutherland in her farewell season at the Sydney Opera House. Two years and many successful vocal competitions later, she moved to Europe, where she sang with the Frankfurt Kammeroper and Darmstadt Oper, before accepting a full-time contract with Oper Frankfurt.
Six years later, due to health issues, Janelle returned to Brisbane. Although faced with chronic illness and disability, she nonetheless successfully auditioned for the Opera Queensland and performed in a number of productions. She also sang the role of High Priestess in Michael Edgley’s production of Aida in the ANZ Stadium in 1997; sang roles in the IHOS Opera/Access Arts experimental opera, The Divine Kiss when it premiered in the 1998 Brisbane Festival and on its 1999 Hobart tour; formed Jazopra, the piano/vocal duo with Jann Rutherford; the a capella soprano vocal trio The Three Muses; recorded 3 solo cds – The Man I Love, Jazopra – From Sinatra to Sutherland, and Maybe this Time (launched in Montreal, October 2009). In 2001 she sang the Strauss Four Last Songs with the Brisbane Sinfonia as a fund-raiser for Diabetes Research, and in 2006, was honoured to be invited by the now Australian Governor-General, Her Excellency Quentin Bryce to perform a solo recital at Queensland Government House.
She has been invited as a conference speaker, media spokesperson and singer to conferences, festivals and functions throughout Australia and in 2003, as media spokesperson and guest singer to the International Diabetes Federation World Congress in Paris; as special guest artist in 2004 for the Bermuda Diabetes 25th birthday fund-raising gala sponsored by Reg Grundy; to sing at an Australian Tourism launch in Seoul Korea in 2005; as guest speaker/singer for the Baxter healthcare international manager’s meeting banquet in 2007 at the Ritz-Carlton Chicago; as an invited presenter and singer to the International Diabetes Federation World Congress in Montreal in 2009; and to present 3 concerts in a Swiss concert tour in 2010.
In 1999, Janelle established Salubrious Productions, an entertainment and production agency, specialising in professional artists with a disability. She has produced more than 1000 mainstream and disability events, including concerts, art exhibitions, launches, pantomimes, cabarets and a film. She also holds numerous contracts with the Brisbane City Council, producing both concert and library series.
Janelle is regularly asked to deliver conference papers, give inspirational and motivational talks, and has had about 100 of her arts, disability and health articles published, as well as winning awards for some of her short stories.
Janelle has been invited and appointed to many arts, health and disability boards and committees, both in the not-for-profit and government sectors, and is well known for her lobbying and advocacy efforts.
