Outback Spirit Formed in 2002, this unique group of artists has combined their diversity into an exciting musical and cultural blend.
The 'endeavour' Wacol Adult Training and Support Service as part of year of the Outback ran a program of indigenous culture and music. Dutchman, Bart Brameijer, a Wacol ATSS Supervisor began teaching didgeridoo to the clients as part of the program. As an enthusiastic hobbyist of didgeridoo, Bart made PVC pipe didgeridoos for the clients to practice on, and they later painted these pipes in an indigenous art style. William Barton, internationally renowned didgeridoo player, currently resident with the Queensland Orchestra, gave didgeridoo lessons to the endeavour clients, demonstrating traditional music and culture.
Jeffrey Hellens as the most advanced student, played at the Disability Action Week Awards Ceremony and the National poetry Week with Bart and Delmae Barton, Dreamtime Opera Diva. The pieces were especially composed for the occasions using Delmae's poetry and William's music.
Delmae is widely recognised as Australia's Dreamtime Opera Diva who performs as a solo artist as well as collaborating with her son William Barton in the group DREAM TIME SPIRIT.In October 2002 the ensemble including William and a Japanese didgeridoo player performed at the Powerhouse, Brisbane to welcome the president of the Wataboshi Music Festival from Japan.
The performance by Outback Spirit encompasses - mystically woven operatic harmonies with traditional didgeridoo and percussion, taking the listener on a spiritual and inspirational journey into ancient songlines of the universe.
